2. | The Truth Of Child Marriage In A Social Context: Responsibility Of Nurse And Midwife Eda Yakıt, Anahit Margirit Coşkun Pages 3 - 10 Although decreasing gradually in the world,child marriages still keep their importance.In the world,child marriages have been found to be much higher among female children as compared to males.According to the law,each individual under the age of 18 is a child,and each girl married under this age is recognized as a child bride.This marriages have done along the self interests of the girl parents and families who the girl went to.Early marriage affects the entire life of a girl.Some of these negative effects include taking the responsibility of a family and children at a young age,leaving education,not having a profession,economic dependency and being ignored and seen asunworthy in the family.The biggest problematic area about early marriages is seen in the reproductive health.Forced marriage without girl’s consent,responding a man's sexual desire at an older age maybe at her father’s agewhich is considered as a rape,lack of knowledge about preventionof pregnancy,adolescent pregnancies and their risks for the mother-fetus and newborn,risk for sexually transmitted increased infections,frequent pregnancies and births in high numbers,and so on problems.Governments and non-governmental organizations have very important responsibilities in the context of international laws for the prevention of these marriages.It is important for the nurses and midwives who provide health care services to analyze the causes and consequences of child marriages and to organize the care and social support services in the scope of their traditional and contemporary roles.Parents’and families’efforts for hiding child marriages and pregnancies because of the legal consequences of such marriages make it difficult to specify the problem and reach these groups.Nurses and midwives,who are within the society and gain their trust,can be quide for the parents raising awareness of young people and parents about the prevention of marriages and pregnancies at early ages. |

4. | Developing Attitude Scale for Caregiver Role of the Nurses: Validity and Reliability Tests Cem Kocak, Saniye Ayla Albayrak, Nuriye Büyükkayacı Duman Pages 16 - 21 OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to develop Attitude Scale for Caregiver Role of The Nurses (ASCRN) and to perform its validity and reliability tests METHODS: Administration of the scale was done with 162 nurses who were selected using random sampling method out of 400 nurses. The data were expressed item analysis, correlation analysis, Cronbach’s Alpha validity coefficient, Kendall W test, Kaiser Meyer Olkin and Barlett’s Test, principal components analysis and factor analysis methods. RESULTS: it was seen that there was no statistically significant difference between the points of the experts (P>0.05) which indicated that reliability of the scale was established in terms of language and content. Cronbach’s Alpha value of all items of the scale was 0.906. İtems whose the item-total score correlation was lower were removed from the scale and internal consistency was assessed, Cronbach’s Alpha value did not differ significantly. İt could be clustered into three subscales because percentages of variance explained of each subscale were found to be close to each other after factor rotation. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the scale was very reliable, each item made positive contributions to the reliability and average correlations of inter-items were satisfactory or good. |
5. | Are Midwife Candidates Who Play a Key Role in Maternal Child Health Services Motivated Well Enough? A Survey Study Şükran Ertekin Pınar, Gülay Yıldırım, Özlem Duran, Büşra Cesur, Zehra Üstün, Elif Güler Pages 22 - 31 OBJECTIVE: The study was conducted to determine midwifery students’ considerations regarding the choice of profession, professional perspectives, professional motivation levels and the factors affecting their motivation. METHODS: The sample of this descriptive study comprised 220 first-, second-, third- and fourth-year students studying at the Department of Midwifery Faculty of Health Sciences of a state University. To collect data, the Personal Information Form questioning socio-demographic characteristics of the students and Motivation Sources and Problems Scale were used. To analyze the data, percentage distribution, analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Student's t-test, the Kruskal-Wallis, the Mann-Whitney U test, the Tukey test and Bonferroni-corrected Mann-Whitney U test were used. RESULTS: In this study, it was found of the students, 59.5% placed midwifery in their first 10 career choices, 47.3% chose it on their own will, 69.1% wanted to choose another profession, 74.5% considered the midwifery as an appropriate profession for themselves, 73.2% partially agreed to the community's point of view, 44.5% had partially positive view about midwifery before starting school, 75.5% had positive views about midwifery after starting school, and 66.8% considered midwifery as a difficult profession. In this study, the comparison of the students’ mean scores in terms of their school years revealed a statistically significant difference for intrinsic, negative and occupational learning motivation (p<0.05),but no difference for extrinsic motivation (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Students’ being in the first year of the school affected their professional motivation positively. It is recommended that students to start university education should be informed of the pros and cons of midwifery, that they should be motivated to choose a career which they consider as decent for themselves and that the fourth year students should be provided training about the professional motivation. |

6. | Patient Handoff In Perinatal Patient Safety: Communication Techniques Used Sevda Demir, Nevin Hotun Şahin Pages 32 - 37 Perinatal patient safety forms the most important part of the optimal health care of the mother and the neonate. Perinatal period which commences at 20 completed weeks of gestation and ends seven completed days after birth, is a risk period for the pregnant, fetus and puerperal. Perinatal patient safety aims at ensuring that the neonate and the mother receive care at gestation, throughout and after the labor in an environment as safest as possible, as well as at preventing maternal and neonatal mortality. Nurses and midwifes are no doubt the most important members of the team in ensuring perinatal patient safety. Studies conducted toward the root causes of medical errors report that medical errors results substantially from miscommunication. Complete and accurate information that healthcare personnel conveys to each other is of vital importance during patient handoff process. Communication is one of the most important measures taken in order to prevent harm to the patient during the provision of health care services for a complete, precise and explicit handoff of the patient, which is of vital importance in terms of perinatal patient safety. Some professional communication techniques have been developed which involve questioning and answering opportunities with a view to ensure a standardized communication during patient handoff process. SBAR, I PASS THE BATON, 5 P’S, HANDOFFS are the most frequently used professional communication techniques. This article aims at introducing professional communication techniques in the process of patient handoff and laying emphasis on their use in the field of perinatology as well as increasing the awareness in this respect. |

7. | The Nurse’s Attitudes and Beliefs Towards Sexuality Meltem Demirgöz Bal Pages 38 - 42 OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the nurses’ attitudes and beliefs for sexual health care of patients. METHODS: As a descriptive study was conducted for totally 211 nurses who accepted to participate to the survey between the dates of January and March 2014 at a public hospital. The data were collected by a data form developed by the researchers and by the Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs Survey. RESULTS: The 19.4% of nurses only noted that they give sexual health care. The results of the study have indicated that most of the nurses (67.3%) noted to talk about sexual problems of patients as a responsibility of nurses. It has been found that more than half of the participants (57.3%) felt confident to diagnose the patients’ sexual problems. On the other hand the results have also shown that most nurses (76.3%) did not feel comfortable talking about sexual issues and (67.8%) of nurses felt that the patients lacked of interest in sexuality because of suffering their illnesses. It has been found a significant relationship between the experience about giving a sexual healt care and the Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: It has been found that the experience of nurses is limited to give a sexual health care and there are medium level barriers. It has therefore been considered that the findings of this study are important for planning to overcome the barriers. |
8. | Identifying The Final Year Nursing Students’ Expectations From A Workplace Saliha Koç, Aslıhan Bardak, Kıymet Yılmaz Pages 43 - 50 Aim: The study was conducted to identify and assess final year nursing students’ expectation from a workplace. Methods: The research population is constituted by 16 universities’ final year nursing students in the dates between February-March 2013 while visiting these universities for career days. In the meantime the research sample is defined as 708 students who have accepted to fillout the survey. The data collection form is applied once the letter of permission received. In the analysis of research data, percentage, frequency and Cronbach’s alpha were used. Results: The rate of students who see nursing profession as a job guarantee is 25,9%, the students who chose the profession due to family willing is 19% and the students who choose the nursing in the sense of different profession is found 7%. Amongst the expectation of students who participated to the study in sequence; sharing fair wages, flexible working hours, a manager who approaches closely and concerns employees, ethical management, education programmes, instructive programmes, social activities/events, remote working, discount opportunities from the local shops were specifically defined. Conclusion: Considering nursing students’ expectation who constitutes generation y by nurse managers might be beneficial for decreasing the nurse turnover. |
9. | Levels of nursing students and the relationship between altruism and empathic tendencies Pınar Arpacı, Dilek Özmen Pages 51 - 57 OBJECTIVE: The research was conducted to determine the relationship between levels of altruism and empathic tendencies of nursing students. METHODS: This study, between November 14, 2011 and January 13, 2012 the date, was carried out studying at the Department of Health Sciences School of Nursing students who were accepted to participate. For collecting the data, the socio-demographic form, Altruism Scale and Empathic Tendency Scale were used to. Data were analysed by using SPSS 16.0 package program. RESULTS: The average age of the students in the Department of Nursing is 20 ± 1.76. Students 30.7% first grader, which is 56.6% more than the two brothers, which is 59.5% to be a general high school graduate was determined. Nursing students’ Altruism Scale average score was determined 72.85±8.18, and Empathic Tendency average score was determined 69.94±8.44. Family subscale score of Altruism Scale for nursing students was 19.87±2.92, social subscale score was 16.10±3.77, helpfulness subscale score 17.91 ± 3.34 responsibility subscale score was determined as 18.96 ± 2.79. CONCLUSION: It was determined that there is a positive but weak correlation between tendency of altruism, empathic. |

10. | Breast cancer patients’ psychosocial problems in post- treatment period and supportive nursing interventions Işıl Işık Pages 58 - 64 Breast cancer, being a serious health threat to women and to women's feeling of femininity and sexuality, is pretty common among women in our country and elsewhere in the world. A diagnosis of breast cancer is one of the most devastating news a woman can hear, causing not only physical but also psychological, social and existential problems. Scientific researches show a wide range of emotions like; depression, adjustment disorder, a decline in the quality of life, anxiety, anger, uncertainty and hopelessness about future, considering suicide, social isolation, self-esteem decline, destruction of body image, anxiety about losing her femininity, and sexual dysfunction. The aim of psychological support for breast cancer patients is to help them cope with the problems caused by the illness and to make sense of one's infirmity. A quick check on the scientific literature shows that psychological support from breast cancer nurses can increase psychological adaptation, self perception, functionality, individual independence and can improve the quality of life among the breast cancer patients. Psychosocial support initiatives by breast care nurses for breast cancer patients have been investigated. Psychosocial support initiatives like; Psychoeducational groups, -Cognitive behavioral therapy, Family therapy, Phone call advices, or efficiency testing of several therapies were proven effective in decreasing depression and anxiety, and in increasing the quality of life, and increasing efficiency in coping with the disease, and advancing adaptation levels to the illness and improving symptom management. |
