The Nurse’s Attitudes and Beliefs Towards Sexuality

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the nurses’ attitudes and beliefs for sexual health
care of patients.

METHODS: As a descriptive study was conducted for totally 211 nurses who accepted to participate to the survey between the dates of January and March 2014 at a public hospital. The data were collected by a data form developed by the researchers and by the Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs Survey.
RESULTS: The 19.4% of nurses only noted that they give sexual health care. The results of the study have indicated that most of the nurses (67.3%) noted to talk about sexual problems of patients as a responsibility of nurses. It has been found that more than half of the participants (57.3%) felt confident to diagnose the patients’ sexual problems. On the other hand the results have also shown that most nurses (76.3%) did not feel comfortable talking about sexual issues and (67.8%) of nurses felt that the patients lacked of interest in sexuality because of suffering their illnesses. It has been found a significant relationship between the experience about giving a sexual healt care and the Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (p<0.05).
CONCLUSION: It has been found that the experience of nurses is limited to give a sexual health care and there are medium level barriers. It has therefore been considered that the findings of this study are important for planning to overcome the barriers.

Hemşirelerin Cinsel Bakıma İlişkin Tutum ve İnançları

AMAÇ: Bu çalışmada, hemşirelerin hastaların cinsel bakımına ilişkin tutum ile inançlarının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
YÖNTEMLER: Bu çalışma tanımlayıcı bir araştırma olarak, Ocak - Mart 2014 tarihleri arasında bir Devlet Hastanesinde, çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 211 hemşire ile yürütülmüştür. Veriler “Veri Toplama Formu” ve “Cinsel Tutum ve İnanç Ölçeği” kullanılarak toplanmıştır.
BULGULAR: Hemşirelerin sadece beşte birinin (%19.4) cinsel sağlık bakım hizmeti verdiği belirlenmiştir. Katılımcıların %67.3’ü hastalarla cinsel sorunları hakkında konuşmanın hemşirenin bir sorumluluğu olduğunu belirtmiştir. Hemşirelerin yarısının (%57.3) cinsel tanılama yeteneğine güvendiği saptanmıştır. Buna rağmen; %76.3’ünün cinsel konularla ilgili konuşmaktan rahatsızlık hissettiği ve hastaneye yatan hastaların cinsel sorunları ile ilgilenemeyecek kadar hasta (%67.8) olduklarını düşündükleri belirlenmiştir. Hemşirelerin cinsel sağlık bakımı verme deneyimi ile Cinsel Tutum ve İnanç Ölçeği toplam puanları arasında anlamlı ilişki saptanmıştır (p<0.05).
SONUÇ: Bu çalışmada hemşirelerin cinsel sağlık bakımı vermeye ilişkin deneyimlerinin sınırlı olduğu ve orta düzeyde engellerinin bulunduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma bulgularının, hemşirelerin cinsel bakım engellerinin giderilmesine yönelik girişimlerin planlanması açısından değerli olduğu düşünülmektedir.
