3. | The Effect of COVID-19 Infection on Maternal and Fetal Health: Systematic Review Ebru Bekmezci, Hediye Karakoç doi: 10.5222/HEAD.2020.89090 Pages 207 - 213 Objective: COVID-19 has spread rapidly all over the world, causing negative consequences for human health. Pregnant women and newborns may be more susceptible to infection due to physiological and immunological changes that occur during pregnancy. Limited research on the effects of COVID-19 during pregnancy raises serious concerns about the negative effects on pregnant women and newborns. This systematic review aimed to determine the effects of COVID-19 on maternal and fetal health and pregnancy outcomes. Methods: This systematic review included articles published in Turkish or English until April 6, 2020 among pregnant and newborn populations. The studies were selected from the PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases independently by two researchers. A combined percentage calculation was made regarding some commonly reported results from the selected studies. Results: A total of eight studies comprising 137 pregnant women, seven in Wuhan and one in New York, were included in the review. It was determined that 25.2% of pregnant women had chronic disease, non-pregnant adults with COVID-19 had mild symptoms with similar clinical features, 76.8% had caesarean delivery, and 2.2% presented an infection in the newborn. Conclusion: Current studies are insufficient to explain the effects of COVID-19 on pregnancy in terms of level of evidence. Therefore, it is important to carry out extensive research on the subject. |

5. | Experiences about Randomized Controlled Trials from the Perspective of Nurse Academicians: A Qualitative Study Nur Izgu, Zehra Gök Metin doi: 10.5222/HEAD.2020.84829 Pages 222 - 230 INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to thoroughly investigate nurse academicians’ experiences about randomized controlled trials. METHODS: This descriptive qualitative study was conducted with seven nurse academicians working in a public university and have experience on randomized controlled trials, between March-April 2019. Data were collected performing face-to-face in-depth interviews with a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were recorded via a voice-recorder and transcribed verbatim. Data were interpreted by the themes and sub-themes that emerged with the descriptive analysis technique. RESULTS: Themes and (subthemes) emerging from qualitative analysis included (1) challenges faced during randomized controlled trials (literature reviews, ethical and/or institutional approvals, administration and publication processes of the research, (2) achievements from conducting randomized controlled trials (individual and academic), and (3) problem-solving strategies related to the challenges experienced during randomized controlled trials (having comprehensive knowledge of research issue and literature, improving communication skills, being determined to conduct research, and focusing on the contributions of the research rather than worrying about publication). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study revealed that nurse academicians face important challenges related to study design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting of randomized controlled trials’ outcomes. Another important finding is that despite the challenges, academicians reported they were satisfied with the process and offered solutions to the challenges. Based on these results, it is recommended that nurse academicians attend comprehensive lectures and/or courses related to randomized controlled trials. |
