Facing 21st Century Challenges with a 20th Century Education: The Case of Nursing

The global nursing shortage has many faces. Health and education
systems are both undergoing revolutionary changes which have
disrupted traditional health and educational practices. Business values
have replaced both health and educational norms and professional
values. The commodification of education and health has increased
the need for common educational standards which in the case of
nursing has facilitated nurse migration and the export of nurse
education. Unfortunately it threatens to standardize down as well as
up. In other words, without considering the needs of a 21st century
education which, in the health professions more generally has not
kept pace with societal needs, there is a risk that the nursing profession
seen as a commodity, will face educational deskilling in the interest
of maximizing profits in the expanding privatized health and education
systems. This paper argues that the nursing profession must be open
to new ideas that will transform both education and practice.

20. Yüzyıl Eğitimini Kullanarak 21. Yüzyılın Zorluklarıyla Yüzleşmek: Hemşirelik Örneği

Küresel hemşire eksikliğinin birçok yönü bulunmaktadır. Sağlık
ve eğitim sistemlerinin her ikisi de geleneksel anlamda bilinen
sağlık ve eğitim uygulamalarına sekte vurmuş olan ve halen süregelen
devrimsel değişikliklerdir. Sağlık ve eğitim normları ile mesleki
değerler yerlerini işletme değerlerine bırakmışlardır. Eğitim ve
sağlık hizmetlerinin metalaştırılması genel eğitim standartlarının
oluşturulmasını gerektirmektedir; bu durum hemşirelik açısından
ele alındığında hemşire göçünü ve hemşirelik eğitimi ihracını
kolaylaştırmaktadır. Ne yazık ki bu standartlaşma aşağı yönlü
olduğu kadar yukarı yönlü de olmaktadır. Diğer bir deyişle, sağlık
uzmanlığının genellikle toplumsal ihtiyaçlara ayak uyduramadığı
21. yüzyıl eğitiminin gerektirdikleri dikkate alınmaksızın aslında
tıpkı ekonomik bir mal olarak görülen hemşirelik mesleğinin, özel
sağlık ve eğitim hizmetlerinin yaygınlaşması ile birlikte karı en üst
düzeye çekmek uğruna, eğitimsel açıdan vasıfsızlaştırılması riski
söz konusudur. Bu makale hemşirelik mesleğinin hem eğitim hem
de uygulama açısından bu mesleği dönüşüme uğratacak yeni fikirlere
açık olması gerektiğini öne sürmektedir.
