The Effect of the Education Aiming at Informing About Schizophrenia to Social Distance and Attitudes Among High School Students

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the effects of a high-school education
program about schizophrenia and how it can reduce stigmatization and
change the social distance and attitudes in students towards people
with schizophrenia.
METHODS: The study sample was carried out with high-school students
between 14 and 19 years old at Nisantasi Nuri Akin Anatolian High
School which is affiliated with the National Education Ministry in Sisli,
Istanbul. The social distance and attitudes of students towards people
with schizophrenia were assessed before and after class instruction
and a film showing a person with schizophrenia (experimental group
(n=30) and control group (n=30)). The assessment was repeated a
week later. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics
(percentage, mean, standard deviation, min-max) and comparative
statistics (t test).
RESULTS: No significant changes were observed to the Social Distance
Scale (SDS) and Beliefs Toward Mental Illness Scale (BMI) totals and
sub-dimensions scores (p>.05) in the control group before and after
instruction. In the experimental group, favorable social distance to
people with schizophrenia and attitudinal changes were observed
to the SDS (p<.001) and BMI scores (p<.05) and “dangerous” subdimension
(p<.01) score. There were no significant changes to other
sub-dimension scores (embarrassment, desperation, and interpersonal
communication breakdown) in either group.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that social distance and attitudes
towards schizophrenia can be changed favorably in adolescents by
including this aim in the school’s mental health program.

Lise Öğrencilerinde Şizofreniye Yönelik Bilgilendirme Eğitiminin Sosyal Mesafe ve Tutuma Etkisi

AMAÇ: Bu araştırma, lise öğrencilerine verilen şizofreniye yönelik bilgilendirme
eğitiminin sosyal mesafe ve tutuma etkisini belirlemek amacıyla
yapılmış yarı deneysel bir çalışmadır.
YÖNTEMLER: Araştırma örneklemini, İstanbul İli Şişli İlçesi Milli Eğitim
Müdürlüğü’ne bağlı Nişantaşı Nuri Akın Anadolu Lisesi’nde okuyan,
14-19 yaş grubunda olan onuncu sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmuştur (deney:
30, kontrol: 30). Veriler, Öğrenci Bilgi Formu, Sosyal Mesafe Ölçeği
(SMÖ) ve Ruhsal Hastalığa Yönelik Tutum ve İnanç Ölçeği (RHİÖ)
kullanılarak Nisan- Mayıs 2010 tarihleri arasında toplandı. Deney ve
kontrol gruplarına eğitim öncesi ön-test uygulandıktan sonra, deney
grubuna araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan şizofreniye yönelik bilgilendirme
eğitimi verildi. Eğitim programından bir hafta sonra her iki
gruba son-test uygulandı. Verilerin analizinde, tanımlayıcı istatistikler
(yüzdelik, aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma, en alt ve en üst değerler)
ve karşılaştırma istatistik (t testi) yöntemleri kullanıldı.
BULGULAR: Kontrol grubunda eğitim öncesi ve eğitim sonrası SMÖ,
RHIÖ toplam puan ve alt boyut (tehlikeli, çaresizlik ve kişilerarası iletişimde
bozulma ve utanma) puan ortalamaları arasında anlamlı bir fark
olmazken, deney grubunda eğitim öncesine göre SMÖ puanı (p<.001),
RHİÖ toplam puan (p<.05) ve tehlikeli alt boyutu puan (p<.01) ortalamalarının
ise anlamlı düzeyde düştüğü; eğitim öncesi ve eğitim sonrası
RHİÖ’nün çaresizlik ve kişiler arası iletişimde bozulma (ÇKİB) ve
utanma alt boyutlarının puan ortalamaları arasında ise anlamlı bir fark
olmadığı (p>.05) saptandı.
SONUÇ: Ergenlere yönelik okul ruh sağlığı programlarının sosyal mesafe
ve tutumlarda etkili olduğu söylenebilir.
