Knowledge and Practice in Fever Management of Mothers with Children Under the Age of Five

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and practice in fever management of mothers with children under the age of fi ve years old.
METHODS: This descriptive study was performed in a state hospital in September 2015- February 2016. The sample consisted of 180 mothers with under 5 age children who addmitted the child clinics with any reason and accepted participate the study. Data were collected with a questionaire prepared by researcher. The questionaire was applied face to face interviewing technics and was took about 10-15 minutes. Data were analyzed in computer based SPSS program by using numbers, percentiles and chi-square tests.
RESULTS: The average age of mothers in the study was 30.03±5.25, 42.8% of them were high school graduates, 86.7% of them had a nuclear family, 85.0% of them had social security, and 70.6% of them assessed their income status as middle. The average age of the children was 3.12±1.41. The mothers stated that 88.3% of the children had a fever at least once in the previous year. Also, 87.2% of mothers stated they had special thermometers for their children at home, 96.7% of them stated they could measure the fever of children with thermometer and 70.7% of them stated that “a fever is a body temperature of 38° degrees or above”. There were statistically signifi cant differences between mothers’ education, employment status and family type and the method to determine fever.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: According to the fi ndings, it was seen that mothers have insuffi cient knowledge and practice related to fever management and they need to receive more education and counselling.

5 Yaş Altı Çocuğa Sahip Annelerin Ateş Yönetimine İlişkin Bilgi ve Uygulamaları

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Araştırmanın amacı çocuk kliniklerine başvuran 5 yaş altı çocuğa sahip annelerin çocuklarında ateş görülme durumlarını ve annelerin ateş yönetimine ilişkin bilgi ve uygulamalarını değerlendirmektir.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Araştırma Eylül 2015– Şubat 2016 tarihleri arasında, herhangi bir nedenle bir devlet hastanesinin çocuk polikliniğine başvuran ve araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 5 yaş altı çocuğa sahip 180 anne ile yürütüldü. Veriler araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan soru formu kullanılarak yaklaşık 10-15 dakika içerisinde yüz yüze görüşme tekniği kullanılarak toplandı. Elde edilen veriler SSPS programında sayı, yüzde, ki kare testleriyle analiz edildi.
BULGULAR: Yaş ortalaması 30.03±5.25 olan annelerin %42.8’i lise mezunu, %86.7’si çekirdek aileye sahip, %85.0’ı sosyal güvence kapsamında olup, %70.6’sı gelir durumunu orta düzey olarak ifade etti. Çocukların yaş ortalaması 3.12±1.45 idi. Annelerin %88.3’ü çocuklarının son bir yılda ateş sorunu yaşadığını, %87.2’si evde çocuklarına ait derece bulundurduğunu, %96.7’si çocuklarının ateşlerini ölçebildiğini ve %70.7’si vücut sıcaklığının 38 derece ve üstü olmasını ateş olarak değerlendirdiğini ifade etti. Annelerin öğrenim ve çalışma durumu ile ateşe karar verme yöntemi arasında anlamlı fark görüldü.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Elde edilen verilere göre, annelerin ateş yönetimi ile ilgili bilgi ve uygulamaları yetersiz olup, eğitim ve danışmanlık alma gereksinimleri vardır.
