The Views of Nursing Students on Distance Education

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to investigate whether nursing students approved of distance education in nursing as well as their positive and negative views of it.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 297 nursing students in April 2015. The socio-demographic data and opinions about distance education were collected using a survey.
RESULTS: Of the students, 87.5% did not approve of distance education in nursing, 79.8% reported that all nursing courses could not be given effectively via distance education, and 83.5% reported that it could cause defi ciencies in laboratory and clinical practices due to the fact that the nursing profession is application-based. Students who supported distance education in nursing thought that “it is economic in the obtaining of information”, “information can be updated”, “it allows collaboration via the internet”, “it is an opportunity for continuing education in nursing after graduation” and “it will be easy to maintain a family life” were positive (p <0.001); however, students who did not support distance education in nursing thought that “it causes limitations in communication due to the excess number of students” was negative (p <0.05).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The majority of the nursing students in this study did not approve distance education in nursing. Thus, positive and negative views of distance education should be explained to students in more detail during formal education.

Hemşirelik Bölümü Öğrencilerinin Uzaktan Eğitime İlişkin Görüşleri

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Çalışmada hemşirelik bölümü öğrencilerinin uzaktan eğitimi onaylama durumları, olumlu ve olumsuz yönlerine ilişkin görüşlerinin incelenmesi amaçlandı.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Kesitsel tipte bu araştırma Nisan 2015 tarihinde toplam 297 hemşirelik bölümü öğrencisi üzerinde yürütüldü. Öğrencilerin sosyodemografik verileri, uzaktan eğitim ile ilgili görüşleri bir bilgi formu ile toplandı.
BULGULAR: Öğrencilerin %87.5’inin hemşirelikte uzaktan eğitimi onaylamadıkları, %79.8’inin uzaktan eğitim ile “hemşirelikteki tüm programların verilemeyeceğini” ve %83.5’inin “hemşirelik gibi uygulama ağırlıklı bir meslekte önemli yeri olan laboratuvar ve klinik uygulamalarda eksikliklere neden olacağını” düşündüğü bulundu. Uzaktan eğitimi onaylayanların “bilgiyi elde etmede ekonomik olacağını”, “bilgilerin sürekli güncelleştirilebildiğini”, “internet üzerinden işbirliğine olanak sağladığını”, “hemşirelikte mezuniyet sonrası sürekli eğitime olanak sağlayacağını” ve “aile hayatını sürdürmeyi kolaylaştıracağını” olumlu (p<0.001), onaylamayanların “öğrenci sayısındaki fazlalık nedeni ile iletişimde sınırlılıklar yaratabileceğini” olumsuz yönü olarak gördükleri bulundu (p<0.05).
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Hemşirelik öğrencilerin büyük çoğunluğu uzaktan eğitimi onaylamamaktadır. Bu nedenle örgün eğitimleri sırasında öğrencilere uzaktan eğitimin olumlu ve olumsuz yönleri hakkında detaylı bilgi verilmelidir.
