Professional Values of Academicians at a Nursing Faculty

INTRODUCTION: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, it was aimed to determine the nurse academicians’ professional values working at a nursing faculty.
METHODS: 89 nurse academicians (Participation rate=74.2%) participated in the study, which was conducted at a faculty of nursing in the western Turkey between January and February 2016, the whole population of which (120 nurse academicians) was attempted to be achieved. Data in the study, for which the Ethics Committee Approval and the written consent from participants were obtained, were collected with Descriptive Information Form and the Revised Nursing Professional Values Scale (NPVS-R). The lowest possible score obtainable from the scale is 26 and the highest possible score is 130. The fact that an individual obtains a high score for the scale indicates that this individual has strong professional values. The research data were analyzed with SPSS 16.0 program. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov analysis, independent t test and one-way ANOVA were used for analysis with SPSS 16.0 program.
RESULTS: It was determined that the average age of the academicians was 35.52±9.60 years, they worked for 13.38±10.65 years on average, 55.0% of them had doctoral degree, and 85.4% of them gave information about values to students. The mean total item score of NPVS-R was 109.87±1.37 and the mean total item scores of NPVS-R was 4.22±0.50. Academician nurses in the age group of 36-45 who gave information about the values to their students were found to have higher scores in NPVS-R (p<0.05). It was determined that the academicians’ education level, academic title, working status as a nurse, and the study year did not have a significant difference on the mean score of the NPVS-R (p>0.05).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It was determined that academicians had strong professional values. It was found significant difference in perception of professional values that academicians’ characteristics of age and giving information about values to their students.

Bir Hemşirelik Fakültesindeki Akademisyenlerin Mesleki Değerleri

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Bu tanımlayıcı kesitsel tipteki araştırmada, bir hemşirelik fakültesinde görev yapan akademisyen hemşirelerin mesleki değerlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Türkiye’nin batı bölgesinde bir Hemşirelik Fakültesi’nde Ocak-Şubat 2016 tarihleri arasında yürütülen ve evrenin tümüne (120 akademisyen hemşire) ulaşılmaya çalışılan araştırmaya, 89 akademisyen hemşire katıldı (Katılım oranı=%74.2). Etik Kurul İzni ve katılımcıların yazılı izni alınan araştırmada veriler, Tanımlayıcı Bilgi Formu ve Revize Edilen Hemşirelik Mesleki Değerleri Ölçeği (HMDÖ-R) ile toplandı. Ölçekten en az 26 puan, en fazla ise 130 puan alınabilmektedir. Ölçekten alınacak puanın yüksek olması, kişinin güçlü mesleki değerlere sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Araştırma verileri SPSS 16.0 programında, sayı-yüzde dağılımı, ortalama, Kolmogorov-Smirnov analizi, bağımsız örnek t testi ve tek yönlü varyans analizi ile incelendi.
BULGULAR: Akademisyen hemşirelerin yaş ortalamasının 35.52±9.60 olduğu, ortalama 13.38±10.65 yıldır çalıştıkları, %55.0’inin doktora derecesine sahip oldukları ve %85.4’ünün öğrencilere değerler ile ilgili bilgi verdikleri belirlendi. Akademisyen hemşirelerin HMDÖ-R’den almış oldukları toplam puanın 109.87±1.37 olduğu, madde toplam puan ortalamasının 4.22±0.50 olduğu belirlendi. Öğrencilerine değerler ile ilgili bilgi veren ve 36-45 yaş grubunda yer alan akademisyen hemşirelerin HMDÖ-R’den daha yüksek puan aldıkları belirlendi (p<0.05). Akademisyenlerin eğitim düzeyi, akademik ünvanı, hemşire olarak çalışma durumu ve çalışma yılının HMDÖ-R puan ortalaması üzerinde anlamlı bir farklılık oluşturmadığı saptandı (p>0.05).
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Akademisyenlerin güçlü mesleki değerlere sahip oldukları belirlendi. Akademisyenlerin mesleki değerleri algılamalarında, yaş ve öğrencilere değerler ile bilgi verme değişkenlerinin anlamlı bir farklılık oluşturduğu belirlendi.
