Increasing Nurses’ Awareness Levels for Rotavirus Gastroenteritis in Children’s Services in Hospitals in the Edirne Province

OBJECTIVE: To increase the awareness levels of nurses working in the children’s
services of the hospitals in the Edirne province for rotavirus
gastroenteritis prevention, care and control, which otherwise is highly
epidemic.
METHODS: The research was conducted on 65 nurses who agreed to
participate in the study from December 2008 to February 2009 at the
children’s services of state and private hospitals within the Edirne
province, and a university hospital. The sample group was given
training through a training booklet. The data were obtained using
questionnaires developed by the researcher in line with the literature
and expert opinion. Analysis of data was carried out via Wilcoxon and
matched t-test analysis, using the packaged software SPSS 16.00.
RESULTS: It was found that while the ratio of correct answers concerning
heat resistance status, incubation period of the agent, months with
high incidence of the disease, age group at most risk, clinical course
of the disease, applicability of the vaccine to preterm infants and
similar matters was below 50%, it rose to about 100% following
training.
CONCLUSION: It is necessary for the nurses working in children’s services
to receive regular training on rotavirus gastroenteritis. The training
provided proved to be statistically significant (p<0.001).

Edirne İli Hastaneleri Çocuk Servislerinde Çalışan Hemşirelerin Rotavirüs Gastroenteriti Hakkında Farkındalık Düzeyinin Artırılması

AMAÇ: Edirne ili hastaneleri çocuk servislerinde çalışan hemşirelerin
oldukça bulaşıcı olan rotavirüs gastroenteritinin bakım, korunması ve
kontrolü hakkında farkındalık düzeylerinin artırılması amacı ile tek
grup ön test-son test yarı deneysel bir çalışma olarak gerçekleştirildi.
YÖNTEMLER: Araştırma, 2008 Aralık- 2009 Şubat ayları içinde, Edirne ili
içindeki devlet ve özel hastaneler ile üniversite hastanesi çocuk
servislerinde çalışan ve çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 65 hemşire ile
gerçekleştirildi. Örneklem grubuna eğitim yapılarak eğitim kitapçığı
verildi, veriler literatür ve uzman görüşü doğrultusunda geliştirilen
soru formu kullanılarak eğitim öncesi ve eğitim sonrasında elde edildi.
Verilerin analizi bilgisayar ortamında SPSS 16.00 paket programı
kullanılarak Wilcoxon ve eşleştirilmiş t testi analizi ile değerlendirildi.
BULGULAR: Araştırma kapsamına alınan hemşirelerin eğitim öncesinde
etkenin ısıya dayanıklılık durumu, etkenin kuluçka süresi, hastalığın
sık görüldüğü aylar, en çok risk altında olan yaş gurubu, hastalığın
klinik seyri, preterm bebeklere aşının uygulanabilme durumu ve
benzeri konularda doğru cevap oranı %50’lerin altında iken eğitim
sonrası %100’lere çıktığı belirlendi.
SONUÇ: Verilen eğitim ile hemşirelerin bilgilerinde ve farkındalık
düzeyinde anlamlı artma olduğu belirlendi. Çocuk servislerinde çalışan
hemşirelerin rotavirüs gastroenteriti ile ilişkili düzenli eğitim almaları
gerektiği düşünüldü.
