The Place and Importance of Preconception Care and Counseling in Women’s Lives

Many pregnancies in the world, including those in developed countries,
are unplanned. The health of a woman and her partner before pregnancy
may determine the fate of the baby. The concept of preconception care
emerged about thirty years ago in developed countries in order to prevent
poor obstetric outcomes. This approach focuses on improving the health
of expectant mothers and fathers before conception and includes a
number of pre-pregnancy initiatives to achieve a healthy pregnancy
term and healthy baby. This modern primary-care service must be
available to all women in their reproductive ages, not only for couples
who are planning to have children. The healthcare providers working
in related fields are on the team that will make this change in Turkey.
They need education and counseling to increase their awareness of this
issue and to ensure they are competent in order to offer a comprehensive
service. The scope and benefits of preconception care, evaluation criteria,
health service models, and the responsibility of healthcare providers
will be addressed in this article.

Prekonsepsiyonel Bakım ve Danışmanlık: Kadın Yaşamındaki Yeri ve Önemi

Gelişmiş ülkeler dahil dünyada pek çok gebelik plansız olmaktadır.
Oysa gebelik öncesi kadın ve eşinin sağlık durumu ve sağlık alışkanlıkları
doğacak olan bebeğin kaderini belirlemektedir. Prekonsepsiyonel bakım
kavramı, gelişmiş ülkelerde yaklaşık otuz yıl önce kötü obstetrik sonuçları
önlemek amacıyla gündeme gelmiştir. Konsepsiyon öncesi dönemde
anne ve baba adayının sağlığını geliştirmeyi öngören bu yaklaşım, sağlıklı
gebeliğe ve sağlıklı bebeğe ulaşmak için gebelik öncesi birtakım girişimleri
kapsar. Çağdaş yaklaşımda birincil bakım hizmetlerinde yer alması
öngörülen bu hizmetin, sadece çocuk sahibi olmayı planlayan çiftler
için değil, doğurganlık çağındaki her kadına yaşam boyu sunulması
gereken bir hizmet olarak tanımlanmıştır. Ülkemizde bu değişimi
sağlayacak olan ekip, ilgili alanlarda görev yapan sağlık personelidir.
Onların bu konuda farkındalıklarını artırmak, kapsamlı hizmet
sunabilecek yetkinliğe ulaşabilmelerini sağlamak için eğitim ve
danışmanlığa gereksinimleri vardır. Bu makalede prekonsepsiyonel
bakım, kapsamı ve yararları, değerlendirme kriterleri, hizmet modelleri
ve sağlık personelinin sorumluluğu ele alınacaktır.
