The investigation of relationship between proactive personality features and approach to conflict resolution in the interns of nursing students

INTRODUCTION: Aim: Education of clinical nursing is a complicated progress that can be effected from many factors and it should be analysed different aspects. Nursing students are expected to develop proactive behavior and effective conflict resolution approaches in order to obtain positive learning outcomes during vocational training. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between proactive personality characteristics of intern nursing students and conflict resolution approach.
METHODS: Method: This is a descriptive study. Data were collected by face to face interviews with interns of nursing students in May 2014.
RESULTS: Results: This is a descriptive type of research. The data were obtained by face-to-face interview with 96 intern nursing students in May 2014. Findings: 45.8% of the participants stated that they had a conflict with nurses, patients, doctors and student nurses at least once in the clinical setting. The average proactive personality scores of the nursing students were found to be moderate (54.1 ± 8.06). Proactive personality scale score averages are below 60, "confrontation" from subscales of interpersonal conflict resolution scale, in the ones above 60, the "self-disclosure" point average was found to be higher than the others, but the difference between them was not statistically significant.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between demonstrating proactive personality and conflict resolution approaches. However, students with high proactive personality characteristics were found to use "self-disclosure" approach to conflict resolution by using more communication skills. It is suggested that the teaching staff should support the proactive personality that the intern nursing students can express themselves more easily before the clinical internship and teach the rational solutions when there is a conflict.

İntörn hemşirelik öğrencilerinin proaktif kişilik özelliği ile çatışma çözme yaklaşımı arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Amaç: Klinik hemşirelik eğitimi, pek çok faktörden etkilenen ve farklı yönleri ile irdelenmesi gereken karmaşık bir süreçtir. Hemşirelik öğrencilerinin mesleki eğitimi süresince olumlu öğrenim sonuçları elde edebilmesi için, proaktif davranması ve etkili çatışma çözme yaklaşımlarını geliştirmesi beklenmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı intern hemşirelik öğrencilerinin proaktif kişilik özelliği ile çatışma çözme yaklaşımı arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesidir.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipte bir araştırmadır. Veriler Mayıs 2014’de dördüncü sınıf intern hemşirelik öğrencileri ile yüz yüze görüşme yöntemiyle elde edilmiştir.
BULGULAR: Bulgular: Katılımcıların %45.8’i klinik ortamda en az bir kez hemşire, hasta, doktor ve öğrenci hemşire ile çatışma yaşadığını belirtmiştir. Hemşirelik öğrencilerinin proaktif kişilik puan ortalaması orta düzeyde (54.1±8.06) bulunmuştur. Proaktif kişilik ölçek puan ortalaması 60’ın altında olanlarda kişilerarası çatışma çözme ölçeğinin alt ölçeklerinden “yüzleşme”, 60’ın üstünde olanlarda “kendini açma” puan ortalaması diğerlerine göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur ancak arasındaki fark istatiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmamıştır.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Sonuç: Proaktif kişilik özelliğini gösterme ile çatışma çözme yaklaşımları arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmamıştır ancak proaktif kişilik özelliği yüksek olan öğrencilerin daha fazla iletişim becerileri kullanarak çatışma çözme yaklaşımlarından ‘kendini açma’ yaklaşımını kullandığı saptanmıştır. Öğretim elemanları tarafından klinik staj öncesi, intern hemşirelik öğrencilerinin kendini daha rahat ifade edebildiği proaktif kişilik özelliğinin desteklenmesi ve çatışma yaşadığında akılcı çözüm yollarının öğretilmesi önerilmektedir.
