The Ways of Knowing in Nursing

For an individual, knowing is a way to understand both himself/ herself and the world. There are five ways to provide guidance to nurses in the fields of research, practice and education. The ways of knowing such as empirical, aesthetic, ethical, and personal knowing were defined by Carper while emancipatory knowing was defined by Chinn and Kramer. Empirical knowledge is the knowledge which obtained by nurses from the results of research; aesthetic knowing is the knowledge which includes understanding of the knowledge and is known as the art in nursing; ethical knowledge is the knowledge which is used by nurses to decide what to do and how to do it; personal knowledge is the knowledge which is obtained by nurses via their own awareness; emancipatory knowledge is the knowledge in which nurses use their own potential in their applications. The nurse who wants to give professional and holistic care, should know different ways of knowing and should be able to reflect these ways to their applications. This article was written to explain the ways of knowing which are used by nurses.

Hemşirelikte Bilme Yolları

Bilme, bireyin kendisini ve dünyayı anlama ve algılamasının bir yoludur. Hemşirelere araştırma, uygulama ve eğitim alanlarında rehberlik eden beş bilme yolu vardır. Bu bilme yollarından empirik, estetik, etik ve kişisel bilme Carper, özgürleştirci bilme ise Chinn ve Kramer tarafından tanımlanmıştır. Empirik bilme, hemşirenin araştırma sonuçlarıyla elde ettiği bilgiyi, estetik bilme anlama ve yorum içeren hemşirelikte sanat olarak bilinen bilgiyi, etik bilme hemşirenin ne yapması, nasıl yapması gerektiğine karar verirken kullandığı bilgiyi, kişisel bilme hemşirenin kendi farkındalığı ile elde ettiği bilgiyi ve özgürleştirici bilme de hemşirenin sahip olduğu potansiyelini uygulamalarına aktardığı bilgiyi kapsamaktadır. Profesyonel ve bütüncül bakım vermek isteyen hemşire farklı bilme yollarını bilmeli ve bu yolları uygulamalarına yansıtabilmelidir.
