Examining Views and Expectations of Senior Nursing Students During Emergency Department Clinical Practice

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to determine senior nursing students’ views and expectations about the emergency department clinical practice.
METHODS: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out in a school of nursing in Ankara during the 2011-2012 academic years. No sampling method was employed, as 77 senior nursing students were volunteer to take part in the study. The data were collected through “a data-collection form” and “clinical learning environment scale (CLES)”.
RESULTS: The expectations of the senior nursing students’ on the emergency department clinical practice were to participate actively in clinical practice (94.9%) and to meet with health care professionals who show positive attitudes (89.7%). Senior nursing students stated that emergency department clinical practice improved their nursing practice (8.04±1.68), and nursing skills based on professional knowledge (7.87±1.80). The mean of total CLES of students is 72.67±8.99 and the mean of personnel-student relationship subscale 19.37±3.82 out of 30. It was found that a positive relationship between CLES scores and nursing students’ views regarding contributions of the clinical practice at the emergency department to personal and professional development.
CONCLUSION: This study showed that during the emergency department clinical practice, clinical learning environment was positive providing significant contributions to personal and professional development of students. However, it is thought that there is some limitation in terms of providing opportunity to practice the theoretical knowledge taking during education. Therefore, this study is valuable to re-assessment students’ views and expectations on the emergency department clinical practice

Hemsirelik Son Sınıf Ögrencilerinin Acil Servis Klinik Uygulamasına Iliskin Görüslerinin Incelenmesi

AMAÇ: Bu çalışmada, hemşirelik son sınıf öğrencilerinin acil servis klinik uygulamasına ilişkin beklentilerinin ve görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
YÖNTEMLER: Bu çalışma tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel bir çalışma olarak, 2011- 2012 eğitim ve öğretim yılında Ankara’da bir hemşirelik yüksekokulunda, çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 77 öğrenci ile yürütülmüştür. Veriler ‘veri toplama formu’ ve “Klinik Öğrenim Çevresi Ölçeği (CLES)” kullanılarak toplanmıştır.
BULGULAR: Öğrencilerin acil servis klinik uygulamasından beklentileri, klinik uygulamalara aktif olarak katılabilme (%94.9) ve sağlık ekibinin kendilerine karşı olumlu tutum içinde olması (%89.7)’dır. Öğrenciler en yüksek oranda acil servis uygulamasının hemşirelik uygulamalarına ilişkin el becerilerini arttırdığını (8.04±1.68) ve mesleki bilgiye dayalı uygulama yapma imkanı verdiğini (7.87±1.80) ifade etmişlerdir. Öğrencilerin CLES toplam puan ortalaması 72.67±8.99’dır. Acil servis klinik uygulamasının bireysel ve mesleki gelişimlerine katkılarına ilişkin ifadeler ile CLES puanları arasında pozitif yönde ilişki saptanmıştır (p<0.005).
SONUÇ: Bu çalışmada acil servis klinik uygulamasının, öğrencilerin uygulamalarında mesleki ve kişisel gelişimlerine önemli katkılar sağladığı belirlenmiştir. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma bulgularının, acil servis klinik uygulaması yapan öğrencilerin beklentilerinin gözden geçirilmesi açısından değerli olduğu düşünülmektedir.
