Evaluation of Nurses’ Views about Hand Washing Habits and Hand Hygiene Compliance Rates

INTRODUCTION: The study was conducted to identify the nurses' opinions about their hand washing attitudes and to assess their hand hygiene practices during routine care. It is a descriptive and observational research.
METHODS: The nurses (N=63) were asked about their views about hand hygiene habits. Nurses' hand hygiene compliance and hand washing behaviors were observed. Nurses were not aware that their hand washing behaviors were observed. Hand washing behaviors were assessed using the Hand-washing Observation Tool.
RESULTS: Nurses reported to wash their hands frequently ("often" or "always") during the routine patient care in the hospital setting. Researchers observed a total of 703 hand-washing indications. Unlike the nurses' self-reports on hand washing behaviors, hand hygiene compliance rates ranged from 0 to 2.3%. Hand washings were performed using water-soap (54.7%) and alcohol disinfectant (45.3%). Hand washing behaviors mostly were not performed using proper techniques or performed partly proper techniques (97.8%). Only 2.2% of cases washed their hands using proper technique. Nurses (21%) washed their hands for less than 5 seconds, 73.2% for 5-15 seconds, and 5.8% for more than 15 seconds.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Self-reported hand washing habits of the nurses were good, in general. However, the observations showed that hand hygiene compliance rates among nurses were extremely poor. The results revealed there is a need for improving the nurses' attitudes for hand washing and proper hand washing technique, and developing education about hand hygiene.

Hemşirelerin El Yıkama Alışkanlıklarına İlişkin Görüşleri ve El Hijyeni Uyum Oranlarının Değerlendirilmesi

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Araştırma hemşirelerin el yıkama alışkanlıklarına ilişkin görüşlerinin belirlenmesi ve çalıştıkları ünitede sergilenen el yıkama davranışlarının değerlendirilmesi amacıyla gerçekleştirildi. Tanımlayıcı ve gözlemsel özellikte bir araştırmadır.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Örneklemi oluşturan hemşirelerin (N=63) el yıkama alışkanlıkları ve görüşleri anket formuyla sorgulandı. Hemşirelerin el hijyeni uygulamalarını belirlemek amacıyla el yıkama endikasyonları ve bu el yıkama endikasyonlarında el yıkama durumları habersiz olarak El Yıkama Gözlem Aracı kullanılarak gözlendi.
BULGULAR: Hemşireler hasta bakımı sırasında karşılaşılabilen durumlarda ellerini sık yıkadıklarını ("sık sık" veya "her zaman") bildirdi. El yıkama gerektiren toplam 703 durum gözlendi. Hemşirelerin el yıkama davranışlarına ilişkin öz-bildirimlerinin aksine, el hijyeni uyum oranları %0 ile 2.3 arasında bulundu. El yıkama gerektiren durumlarda su-sabun (%54.7) ve alkollü dezenfektan (%45.3) kullanıldı. El yıkama davranışlarının el yıkama tekniğinin %97.8’inde uygun olmadığı/kısmen uygun olduğu, sadece %2.2’sinde ise uygun olduğu gözlendi. El yıkayanların %21’i ellerini 5 saniyeden daha kısa sürede yıkadığı, %73.2’si 5-15 saniye süreyle, %5.8’i ise 15 saniyeden daha uzun sürede yıkadığı gözlendi.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Bu çalışmada hemşirelerin el yıkama alışkanlıklarının genel olarak iyi olarak bildirdiği ancak gözlem sonucu el hijyeni uyum oranlarının son derece düşük olduğu düşük olduğu dikkat çekmektedir. Sonuçlar hemşirelerin doğru el yıkama tekniği ve el yıkama konusundaki tutumların geliştirilmesine ve el hijyeni konusunda eğitilmesine gereksinim olduğunu göstermektedir.
