Being an Oncology Nurse From the Perspective of Second Year Nursing Students

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted for the purpose of determining the opinions of sophomore nursing students on oncology nursing practices, and the characteristics that an oncology nurse should have.
METHODS: The descriptive study is conducted with sixty students, who accepted to participate in the study and who had a training on the roles and responsibilities of oncology nursing, engaging in clinical practices at the oncology clinic, in the Fall and Spring semesters of 2013-2014.. The data of the study is collected through the interview form.
RESULTS: The mean age of students included in the study is 19.91±1.54. A proportion of 96.6% of students attended practice for the fi rst time at the oncology clinic. Opinions of students on oncology patients and oncology nurses; 26.6% of the students defi ned the oncology patient as “the patient group with a lot of physical and psychosocial problems’’ Their opinions on oncology nursing; students reported that nurses should have good communication skills. As for their opinions on oncology practice, the students reported that patients’ psychosocial needs should be addressed.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It can be observed that students are aware ofthe physical and psychosocial needs of oncology patients. The study fi ndings are expected to be used for nursing education.

Hemşirelik İkinci Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Gözüyle Onkoloji Hemşiresi Olmak

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Bu çalışma, hemşirelik 2. sınıf öğrencilerinin onkoloji hemşireliği uygulamaları ile onkoloji hemşiresinin sahip olması gereken özelliklere ilişkin görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Araştırma onkoloji hemşireliğinin rol ve sorumluluklarına ilişkin eğitim alan, onkoloji kliniğinde klinik uygulamasını gerçekleştiren ve araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 60 öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler “Veri Toplama Formu” kullanılarak toplandı.
BULGULAR: Öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 19.91±1.54’dür. Öğrencilerin %96.6’sı ilk kez onkoloji kliniğinde uygulama yapmakta olup öğrencilerin ortalama uygulama süresi 4 gün olarak belirlendi. Öğrencilerin %26.6’sı onkoloji hastasını “Fiziksel ve psikososyal sorunlarının fazla olduğu bir hasta grubu” olarak tanımladı. Onkoloji hemşiresinin olması gereken özelliklerinde en sıklıkla iletişim becerilerinin gelişmiş olması gerektiğini belirtilirken, uygulama açısından ise hastayı psikososyal olarak ele alması gerektiği bildirildi.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Öğrencilerin klinik uygulamaları sırasında onkoloji hastasının fiziksel ve psikososyal ihtiyaçlarının farkında olduğu belirlenmiştir. Hemşirelik eğitimi ve klinik çalışmalarda çalışma bulgularının kullanılacağı düşünülmektedir.
