In the currently rapidly changing health care environment, ongoing professional development is increasingly important. There is no clear, precise definition of professional development. The situation with regard to nursing professional development is further complicated by a number of factors. Research must be undertaken to establish the education, training and development needs of nurses working within a variety of contexts with the ultimate aim of enhancing care provision within these areas. The promotion of quality nursing care includes valuing lifelong learning and engaging in continuing education as a means of maintaining and increasing knowledge and skills.
