Eating Behaviors of Nursing Students

INTRODUCTION: This descriptive study was conducted to determine the eating behaviors of students studying in a university nursing program.

METHODS: This study was conduct with 291 student who were studying in Nursing Section of Ondokuz Mayıs University, School of Health. Data was gained with identification form and Eating Attitude Test. The ethical permission of the study was granted by stated universty’s Clinical Research Ethical Committee. Descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis, Mann-Whitney U test and variance analysis were used for the statistics analysis of the study.

RESULTS: Of the students, 74.9% were women and 25.1% of men; 82.1% between 18-21 years old. 34.7% of the students were studying in their second year, 80.8% were from a nuclear family, 61.5% had a monthly salary more than 1001 TL, 41.5% lived in a town. 61.5% of the students’ mothers graduated from primary school. 44.3% of students stayed in a dormitory and 34% had a partner. The body mass index averages of the students were 21.59±2.66 while the eating behaviors test averages were 18.04±10.51. It was determined that sex, satisfaction with body image and current weight, and also diet had effects on students’ eating behaviors.

CONCLUSION: It was determined that the eating behaviors of nursing students was at a normal level.
