Many international trends have created the need for quality assurance in higher education. Accreditation is a quality assurance process by which competency, authority, and credibility are certified. The goal of accreditation is to ensure that the education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. As nurses professionalize, the drive to be seen as competent and accountable through accreditation has intensified. This paper examines the process of accreditation.
